Tips For Finding Your Missing/Lost Pet
Only someone who has lost a pet can truly understand the heartbreak the pet's guardian experiences when their pet has disappeared. In most cases, prevention is the best cure. Be sure your pet is wearing a collar with the appropriate license and an identifying name tag. Another option is having a digital microchip embedded in your pet's ear. This service can be provided by veterinarians everywhere and the cost is affordable. It is also possible to insert a device yourself. The procedure for implanting the chip is relatively painless for the pet and barely leaves a scar. Most shelters have the necessary scanner to scan the pet for the chip. The chip can be invaluable when ownership of the dog is in doubt, because the chip will have the pet's owner's contact info on it. The chip is also a valuable back up way to identify a pet whose collar has come off.
Other precautions should be taken to prevent pet loss and theft. Be sure your yard is securely fenced, so the dog cannot get under, over, around, or through the fence. Many dogs are lost due to a dog's natural instinct to wander. It is best to inspect the fence thoroughy, and keeping it in good repair. Be sure the gate is always latched securely, so no one can accidentally let your pet loose. Do not leave your dog unsupervised in the yard. In some areas, your little dog could be stolen by dog fighters who use household pets as pit bull bait. It is also possible for dognappers to steal a valuable dog and hold it for ransom.
Another motive for dog theft is stealing pets and selling them to unscrupulous animal testing labs. While there are strict controls and regulations regarding where labs buy their test animals from, other U.S.D.A. laws regulate animal dealers. Class "B" dealers are permitted to obtain "Random Source" animals and are permitted to sell them for profit to testing labs and other entities. Disreputable Class "B" animal dealers sometimes turn to theft as a resource to obtain the animals they sell. The best way to protect from losing your beloved pet to one of these types of animal thieves is to keep the animal with you at all times while out in public. Dot't tie up your dog outside the store while you run inside. A thief can steal your dog as fast or faster that he can steal your car. And by the way, never leave your dog unsupervised in the car. It is unsafe and unhealthy for your pet. If you wouldn't do something like that with a child, don't do it with Fido.
Be sure to take color pictures of your pet every 6 -12 months and keep the current pictures in your pet's health/medical files. If your pet becomes missing, you will then have a current picture to use for flyers, etc.
To increase the chances of finding your missing pet, you must maximize the dissemination of your pet's information. Make flyers with the pet's picture and description and post them in the area where the pet was last seen. You should immediately put your local shelters, humane, and animal control agencies on notice that your pet is missing, by distributing flyers to each agency.
The Internet is also a great way to publish lost pet information, because almost everyone has access to a computer these days. Two Missing Yorkies
Posted
6-5-02
The owners are searching for two Yorkshire Terriers missing since June 15, 2001, from the Binghamton, New York area.
Teak and Zami are both seven-year-old males. When last seen, they were unneutered and weighed about eight pounds each. Neither dog was wearing a collar since their owner thinks they have collapsing trachea, though this would not be detectable by a veterinarian unless they were displaying the proper cough. Neither dog was tattooed or microchipped.
Zami is black with golden tan face and paws. Teak is steel gray with tan face and paws and has been diagnosed with pancreatitis for which he would need immediate medical attention during an episode.
